Why India is a Destination for Legal Services off-shoring?

  1. Foreign Law firms offshore legal work to Indian lawyers for quality, flexibility, technological agility, cost control, and competitive advantage. India is a talent-rich country with a readily available highly motivated, competent and productive intellectual pool having expertise in different legal fields, coupled with operative English skills. It is a mature industry with world-class systems and quality.

India is the second largest producer of law graduates after US, and every year above 80,000 students qualify as advocates and start their career in Legal profession. They have an ability to provide exceptionally high standard quality work for foreign law firms while being less costly to their pockets. According to a report, paralegals and legal assistants based in India earn on average between $6 and $8 an hour, compared with the nearly $18 an hour their U.S. counterparts make.

Furthermore, the preferred medium of legal training is Indian colleges and universities is English thus resulting a significantly large number of lawyers being conversant with, if not proficient in English language. Not only this, the Appellant and Supreme Court proceeding in India are conducted exclusively in English, and Indian legal opinions are also written exclusively in English.

Another significant advantage of outsourcing to India is that it is a common-law jurisdiction rooted in British legal systems and traditions and thus, Indian legal system is similar to the UK system.

  2. The article is nice but has a few typos. Besides I feel Indian lawyers are much better than their counterparts in UK or US. All that Indian lawyers need is a speed to action and technology driven processes. I am working in an LPO and have first hand knowledge about the caliber of lawyers abroad.
